Recently, there are many reports going around of locksmiths that are not legitimate and they scam the unsuspecting residents. This is according to the Division of Consumer Affairs of the Department of Commerce and Insurance in Tennessee. They are urging the public to verify the locksmith that they are booking before making any deals. There are now various tools online that can be used in order to check if the business is legal or not.
According to a statement from the Deputy Commissioner of TDCI or Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance, Bill Giannini, local locksmiths are mandated by the state to have their lisence and they must at all times provide this license as a proof to their customers. Consumers should be aware of people posing as professionals but have no license to show as proof. A quick check is all it takes in order to prevent them from being a victim of locksmith scams.
As an added precaution, the Division of Consumer Affairs provided a guide on how to help consumers avoid illegal locksmiths.
- Before any incident of being locked out, it is important to do your research so you will have someone to contact to in case it actually happens to you. The locksmith must be pre-vetted and keep his number at all times for easy access in times of emergencies. Check the status of their license, inquire whether they have insurance and bond, and make sure that they have a valid business address that is located locally.
- Before making any deals, getting an estimate is important and it should be in writing. Do not start any work if the locksmith does not agree in providing an estimate or the estimate given is different from the once you have agreed upon booking. Make sure to inquire if they have additional charges like emergency charge.
- The company should provide you with the name and information of the locksmith that is coming to service you. If they are using unmarked cars, it should be a red flag.
This guideline is not only applicable to the residents of Tennessee but to all parts of the globe and even those who are booking mobile locksmith in Perth.
